The United States and other major countries, including Korea, have begun work on stabilizing and diversifying the supply chain of key minerals.

It is a full-fledged attempt to decentralize the supply chain of minerals, such as rare earths, dominated by China.

On the occasion of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, a key mineral security partnership meeting was held presided over by the US Secretary of State.

At the meeting attended by 11 partner countries including Korea, Canada and Japan, and 8 resource-rich countries including Brazil, Mongolia and Zambia, plans to stabilize and diversify the supply chain of core minerals were discussed.

MSP, a core mineral security partnership launched in June led by the United States, is a multilateral cooperative effort to stably secure the supply chain of core minerals necessary for the transition to clean energy.

We plan to invest in developing countries with abundant resources by promoting public and private investment in key mineral supply chains such as rare earths and lithium and strengthening environmental standards.

As the US enacted the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to provide tax deduction benefits, cooperation through MSP will help diversify Korea’s supply chain in the future, so Foreign Minister Park Jin will actively contribute to MSP.”

The US-led MSP started with an idea to reduce dependence on China, which dominates the core minerals.

China controls the refining market for rare earths, lithium and cobalt, which are raw materials for high-tech products, including EV batteries.

The United States plans to continue working with mineral-rich countries over the coming months to determine which projects will benefit from the Mineral Security Agreement.
