Are container imports and exports at major ports continuing to recover?

[기자]

A general strike by the cargo unions began, and container shipments at 12 major ports nationwide showed a sharp decline.

From the 25th to the 29th of last month, before the order to start business in the cement field, the average daily import and export remained below 30% of the usual.

Since then, it has been steadily recovering.

After rising to 99% of the usual on the 6th, it exceeded 100% on the 7th and yesterday.

In particular, Gwangyang Port, where container imports and exports were virtually completely suspended, also recorded 97% as of 5:00 pm yesterday.

The government is proud to say that the order to start work has been effective.

There is also an atmosphere in which efforts are being made to follow up on the order to commence business, which was additionally issued in the steel and petrochemical fields yesterday.

Since yesterday afternoon, we have been taking follow-up measures such as the delivery of the business commencement order.

It is a policy to immediately conduct an on-site investigation on vehicles suspected of refusing to transport cars parked on the roads around major facilities.

In addition, after the additional business start order was issued yesterday, a text message was sent to the transportation workers urging them not to comply with the order.

He emphasized that he would strictly respond to illegal activities, such as prosecuting the person who sent the text message.

The level of pressure from the government is getting higher and higher.

This morning, a ministerial meeting was held presided over by Prime Minister Han Deok-soo for the collective transport refusal of the cargo solidarity.

At the meeting, Prime Minister Han said that he would take stern action to prevent the recurrence of endemic illegal collective actions and consequent economic damage.

He stressed that no preconditions are acceptable for the withdrawal of transport refusal, which takes the national economy and people’s livelihood hostage.

At the same time, cement shipments have recovered to normal levels, but some areas such as Jeju are still low, and steel and petrochemical plants are concerned that production is expected to stop after the weekend due to lack of storage space.

It repeatedly urged the cargo regiment to return quickly.

Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong also posted on his SNS,

The government and the ruling party drew a line, saying that the ‘extension of the safe fare system for 3 years’ was invalid.

The government proposed a three-year extension last month, but the proposal was invalid as the cargo unions started refusing collective transportation immediately after the proposal.

The pressure is continuing, emphasizing that it is the consistent position of the government and the ruling party that the expansion of items requested by the cargo union is also unacceptable.
