[국제]Defensive Russia expands attacks on civilian facilities… Another bombardment of Zaporiza

[앵커]

As Ukraine accelerates its retake of territories occupied by Russia, Russian attacks on civilian facilities in Ukraine, such as the Zaporiza nuclear power plant, are on the rise.

The White House said there were no signs of Russia’s use of nuclear weapons and that the US military posture remained unchanged.

How is the situation in Ukraine? You say Russia is increasing artillery fire on civilian facilities?

The New York Times reported that Ukraine recaptured about 500 square kilometers of territory, slightly smaller than Seoul, in a week.

Ukrainian President Zelensky said that over the past week, 29 settlements have been reclaimed, including six in Luhansk.

The New York Times reported that in a counterattack, the defensively-funded Russia launched a missile strike against a civilian city in southern Ukraine.

At least 22 civilians have been killed and 32 injured in Russian attacks in the past 24 hours, Ukrainian officials said.

Russia’s attacks are mainly concentrated in the south, claiming that they are using self-destruct drones.

In particular, he added that early this morning, a chain of explosions presumed to be a Russian missile attack occurred at a medical facility in Kharkiv in the northeast.

Russia’s recent attack on the Zaporiza nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe?

[기자]

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on the 6th local time that it had received a report that the external power lines were damaged due to shelling damage to the facilities outside the Japorija nuclear power plant.

He also explained that when the power line was cut, the emergency diesel generator was operated for 1 hour and 30 minutes to supply power to the reactor.

If power is not supplied to the cooling system in a nuclear power plant, nuclear reactor overheating may cause core melting in which the fuel rod bundles melt, and serious accidents may occur in which radioactive materials are leaked.

Six of the Zaporizha reactors are currently down, but power supplies are still needed to perform their minimum safety functions.

There are concerns that Russia, which is on the defensive, may use nuclear weapons. Even President Biden mentioned it. But the White House explained that there are no signs of a change in its force posture yet?

[기자]

Earlier the day before, President Biden mentioned Russia’s threat of nuclear war by even using the expression ‘Armageddon’, which means the last war of mankind.

White House press secretary Carine Jean-Pierre said there was no new information to be of further concern.

He also said the president’s remarks were addressing concerns over Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons in the past few weeks.

He added that he did not see any indications that Russia was preparing to use nuclear weapons or any reason to adjust the US nuclear strategy.

The White House’s remarks can be seen as reconfirming that nothing has changed from the existing position while evolving President Biden’s remarks.

So far, it has been delivered by the International Department.
