Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida exchanged messages of cooperation for the future on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations.

However, the reality is that the deepening conflict between the US and China has not been able to find an opportunity to restore relations between the two countries due to the Senkaku territorial dispute.

In 1972, Chinese Prime Minister Zhou Enlai and Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka signed the China-Japan Joint Declaration in Beijing.

The two countries that had even fought a war signed diplomatic relations with the promise of peace and friendship.

“Cheers everyone!”

Prime Minister Kishida did not appear at the event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Japan.

Foreign Minister Hayashi, who came as a representative of the Japanese government, indirectly exposed the difficulties of the recent bilateral relations.

Compared to the time when President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Japan was discussed ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the atmosphere has changed significantly.

Japan is looking at China, which is rapidly expanding its power in the Indo-Pacific amid the US-China conflict, with a different vigilance than before.

In particular, we are taking seriously the situation in which Chinese Coast Guard ships frequently come and go around the Senkaku Islands, where there is a territorial dispute.

Chinese Ambassador to Japan Kung Xuanyu, who attended the event, also expressed that China-Japan relations are at a crossroads.

In the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties, President Xi Jinping said that he attaches great importance to China-Japan relations and said, “Let’s create a relationship that meets the demands of the new era.”

Prime Minister Kishida also emphasized the constructive and stable relationship between the two countries and delivered the message that “it is important to usher in a new future.”

It is also predicted that the China-Japan summit will be held for the first time in about three years as it means to avoid further deterioration of relations.

If the two leaders meet for the first time, the stage is expected to be the G20 summit to be held in Indonesia in November.
