[기상센터][날씨] 1,000 lightning strikes at night, steamy during the day… What are the causes and prospects?

[앵커]

Over a thousand lightning strikes across the country last night, it rained heavily.

But during the day, the sweltering heat is getting worse.

Let’s look at the causes and prospects of different weather during the day and night by connecting reporters. Reporter Jeong Hye-yoon!

During the night in Seoul, there were frequent thunderstorms and the rain was so strong that it was hard to sleep.

What is the cause?

[기자]

Yes, the biggest cause is that the atmosphere is filled with water vapor brought by Typhoon Songda No. 5.

There are enough materials to make rain clouds.

There, at the edge of the North Pacific high pressure, the atmosphere is unstable, and as night falls, the downdrafts intensify, creating powerful rain clouds.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, a whopping 1,005 lightning strikes occurred across the country between 0 am and 9 am today, and in particular, 532 lightning strikes, more than half of which were observed in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon alone.

Today, in some provinces along the eastern part of Gyeonggi-do, Yeongseo, and the southern coast, it is expected that more or less strong rain of around 20mm per hour is expected with lightning, so you need to be careful.

The atmospheric instability will be resolved from tomorrow, but the humidity is so high that strong showers are likely to pass frequently.

Even when it rains, the heat doesn’t go away.

Heatwave warnings have been strengthened in the southern regions?

[기자]

Yes, it is.

In the southern provinces, the heat wave warning area has been expanded and strengthened from 10 am today.

A heat wave warning is currently in effect for most of the southern part of the country.

A heat wave warning is in effect for most of the central region except Seoul.

In particular, from tomorrow onwards, the high pressure in the North Pacific will expand in earnest and the heat will intensify.

For the time being, the sweltering heat of 35 degrees in the southern regions will prevail, and the sweltering heat of around 33 degrees in central regions such as Seoul is expected.

This sweltering heat will continue into the night, and tropical nights will appear in most parts of the country.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that hot weather and tropical nights will continue for the next two weeks.
