[문화][27th 부국제] Yang Jo-wi, “The role of a serial killer is scary, but I want to try it”

Actor Yang Jo-wi, who was selected as the winner of the ‘Asian Film Artist of the Year’ award at the 27th Busan International Film Festival, expressed his hopes of challenging new roles and genres.

On the morning of the 6th, at the KNN Theater in Haeundae-gu, Busan, actor Yang Jo-wi, who was selected as the winner of the ‘Asian Film Artist of the Year’, held a press conference and met with domestic and foreign reporters. At the press conference on this day, Jo-wi Yang, the executive chairman of the Busan International Film Festival, and Moon-young Heo, the executive director, participated as moderators.

The ‘Asian Film Artist of the Year’ is an award given to an Asian filmmaker who has shown the most outstanding performance in the Asian film industry and cultural development during the year. This year, Yang Jo-wi, who has a lot of fans in China as well as in Korea, was selected and visited Busan.

Yang Jo-wi, who is considered one of the most important actors of his time, received a lot of love for his appearances in ‘Chongqing Forest’, ‘Happy Together’, and ‘The Flower of Love’. He also met with audiences from around the world by appearing in ‘Beautiful Poetry’, ‘Cyclo’ and ‘Color, System’, which won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival.

In 2000, he won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes International Film Festival in France, and he also set the record for the most awards for Best Actor by achieving 5 gold medals at the Hong Kong Film Awards and 3 awards at the Golden Horse Awards.

On this day, Yang Jo-wi said, “There are many roles I haven’t played before. Rather than having a role that I really want to try, I want to try a role I haven’t played before.”

He continued, “I debuted as a TV station drama. So, I wonder what it would be like to film a drama again recently. There are many fans who have liked me since then, and I think they will be curious, so I want to try a drama. Now that I’m a bit older, I want to try a role that I couldn’t do at a young age.”

In addition, Yang Jo-wi, who recently transformed into a villain through the Marvel movie ‘The Legend of Shang-Chi and Ten Rings’, expressed his hopes of trying to play the role of a serial killer.

He said, “As an actor, you want to try various roles. To be honest, I don’t really come up with villain scripts. Rather than being a villain, I am more interested in people with complex backgrounds and people who make me think a lot. So, on the one hand, it’s scary, but I want to try the role of a serial killer.”

Yang Jo-wi said, “I think that the appearance of a work is a relationship and timing. He thinks that if the last 20 years of an actor’s life were the learning phase, the latter 20 years are the learning phase. Now, I think the stage has come where I can enjoy the job of acting without stress. Because of that, I want to play more diverse roles in the future.”

Meanwhile, at the opening ceremony yesterday (the 5th), he was the last runner on the red carpet and drew the shouts of 4,500 audiences. Also, during this festival, six of his representative works, selected by actor Yang Jo-wi, will be screened, including ‘Amhwa,’ which will be shown for the first time in Korea.

The 27th Busan International Film Festival, Asia’s best film festival, will be held for a total of 10 days from the 5th to the 14th.
