[사회][제보는Y] “It has been said that it has been neuralgia for over a year, but terminal cancer” … Already ‘traces’ in early MRI

[앵커]

A patient in his 70s, who was diagnosed with neuralgia for over a year and received continuous treatment at a university hospital, was unexpectedly diagnosed with terminal cancer and eventually died.

However, when it was later confirmed that the patient’s initial MRI had ‘lesions’ that could be suspected of a tumor, the bereaved families claim that the doctor missed the diagnosis of cancer.

This is the report of ‘Report Y’, reporter Kim Da-hyun.

Hwang’s mother, who served as a strong support for the family with a bright and warm smile.

The three siblings who grew up friendly under their mother still find it difficult to accept her absence.

Three years ago, my mother visited the neurology department of a university hospital in Gyeonggi-do with a cheek pain and was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia.

The trigeminal nerve is a nerve that transmits pain and temperature sensations from the face and head to the brain and is literally a type of neuralgia.

I trusted the doctor and endured for over a year, but the pain did not go away.

Eventually, my mother spurted blood from her mouth.

This is the hospital where Hwang’s mother was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia.

About a year and a half later, my mother was diagnosed with ‘stage 4 salivary gland cancer’ at the otolaryngology department of this hospital.

He was moved to another hospital in absurdity and urgency and underwent several surgeries, but the cancer had already spread to every nook and cranny, and he eventually died.

Afterwards, I asked the external radiology department to read the first MRI picture my mother had taken, and the results were shocking.

A lesion suspected of being a tumor is visible on the underside of the tongue.

A neurosurgeon said that the lesion was confirmed in the photo, and he commented that the doctor may have missed it because he was intensively checking the trigeminal nerve area.

Reporters have asked the doctor who made the first diagnosis to her mother several times, but there has been no response yet.

[병원 관계자 : (교수님이 인터뷰) 안 하신다고 하셨다면서요. 취소하셔서. 따로 진료가 있지도 않으세요. 오늘 같은 경우는.]

According to the Supreme Court precedent, some point out that the doctor’s duty of care or explanation was violated.

[박성민 / 의사 출신 변호사 : 조직 검사를 시행하지 않고 아니면 관련 임상과로 협진을 하거나 진료를 권유하지 않은 게 저는 과실로 인정될 가능성이 크다고 생각합니다.]

In the past 5 years, 37.8% of the 340 applications for relief from cancer-related medical services received from the Korea Consumer Agency were misdiagnosed.

Of these, 87% were diagnosed as cancer but not cancer.

Because the field of medicine itself is so professional, patients and their families cannot help but cry and laugh at every word the doctor says.

[황 모 씨 / 피해 환자 딸 : 자기 부모가 아픈데도 이렇게 1년 반 넘게 진통제만 줬을까요. 저는 그걸 묻고 싶어요. 이 여자 선생님에게.]
