[표지로 읽는 과학] Found a clue to solving lysosomal disease : Dong-A Science

The international academic journal Science published an unidentified pink mass as the cover on the 7th. In the middle is the phrase ‘Enzyme Trafficking’. Below it, the phrase ‘In the Golgi apparatus, LYSET ensures the targeting of the newly synthesized lysosomal enzyme’.

The Golgi apparatus is an organelle found in most eukaryotic cells. The intracellular location of the Golgi apparatus varies from organism to organism. In mammals, the Golgi apparatus is located near the nucleus, whereas in yeast it is scattered throughout the cytoplasm. The label depicts the Golgi apparatus transporting newly synthesized lysosomal enzymes to the lysosome.

Lysosomes are intracellular organelles containing various hydrolytic enzymes in small lipid sacs. Lysosome dysfunction causes various diseases such as neuralgia and Fabry disease, a rare genetic disease. Certain viruses, including the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) virus, can paralyze lysosomes and cause symptoms.

Thomas Brolke, a professor of osteology and biomechanics at the University of Eppendorf in Germany, and Jan Karret, a professor at Stanford University in the United States, published a study in Science this week showing that reset plays an important role in proper lysosomal function. They found that cells without reset had problems with the production of lysosomal enzymes.

Johannes Zuber, a professor at the Institute of Molecular Pathology at the University of Vienna in Austria, and Wilhelm Pam, a team of researchers in charge of cell signaling and metabolism at the German Cancer Research Center, published a study in Science this week showing that resetting plays an important role when uptake occurs. In the absence of reset, lysosomes are depleted of enzymes and lose their ability to digest extracellular proteins.

These two studies are expected to serve as basic research to help treat lysosomal-related diseases. “The two studies confirmed the role and properties of reset in ensuring efficient transport and targeting of lysosomal enzymes,” said Science.
