Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Wonder Woman 1984 received rave reviews among all films released since the Covid-19 pandemic. The film, starring Gal Gadot, shot up in theaters on Christmas Day and grabbed hold box office highest at its opening.
Warner Bros, who produced this film, revealed that Wonder Woman 1984 made US $ 16.7 million (Rp. 2.3 trillion) in the US and Canada. Wonder Woman 1984 was one of the first Hollywood blockbusters to be released in theaters and streaming on the same day.
This simultaneous launch is intended to accommodate a number of open cinemas, limited seating capacity, and the general public who are still afraid to return to the cinema. AT&T, the parent of Warner Bros., said on Sunday that nearly half of its HBO Max retail customers watched Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas Day.
As of October, HBO Max has approximately 3.6 million direct retail customers. It’s unclear how many additional customers the company acquired before Wonder Woman 1984 was released on platform.
“Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key customer and delivery metrics in the first 24 hours on service, and the interest and momentum we saw suggests that this is likely to continue well beyond the weekend,” said Executive Vice President and Manager. General Division Direct-To-Consumer WarnerMedia AndyForssell, .
“During these difficult times, it’s great to give families the option to enjoy this exhilarating film at home, where going to the theater isn’t an option.”
The theatrical success of the film led the studio to accelerate the third film in franchise Wonder Woman. The company said the third film would be written and directed by Patty Jenkins, who directed the previous two films.
Even so, analysts are unsure whether the film could hit the nearly US $ 10 million “The Croods: A New Age” earned during its opening weekend over Thanksgiving, a US holiday yesterday. There are concerns that the broadcast on HBO Max will “become a boomerang” for ticket sales.
Although achievement box office big, criticism also emerged about this film. Wonder Woman 1984’s score, which briefly held an 88% “Fresh” rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes from 92 reviews, fell to 65% from 285 reviews.
Gal Gadot did receive praise, but the film as a whole drew criticism. The story is called under expectations, then there are plot inconsistencies and the CGI is of low quality.
In comparison, the first Wonder Woman film released in 2017 received a score of 93%, or the highest of all films in the DC Extended Universe.
