  • France is the new Nations League winner.

  • In the final, the world champions beat Spain 2-1.

  • Mbappé makes the decision shortly before the end of the game.

Thanks to Kylian Mbappé, France also triumphed in the Nations League for the first time a good three years after the World Cup. The star ensemble of coach Didier Deschamps prevailed 2-1 against Spain in the final and was crowned successor to the premier winner Portugal.

Superstar Mbappé scored the celebrated winning goal for the Équipe Tricolore in the 80th minute on Sunday evening in San Siro, Milan. The Spaniards, however, are still waiting for their first trophy since winning the European Championship in 2012. Mikel Oyarzabal (64th minute) put coach Luis Enrique’s team in the lead, Karim Benzema equalized just two minutes later with a fine flick.

Instead of such big offensive moments as in the high-class semi-finals, the game had been shaped tactically for a long time. Again and again the urge to attack was stopped by fouls. In Mbappé’s winning goal, the Spaniards protested about alleged offside position, but the English referee Anthony Taylor gave the goal after verification. Shortly before the end, Lloris saved the victory for the French with several saves.
