Even tho Louis Foster dominated INDY NXT by Firestone, winning eight out of 14 races last year and clinching the championship by a whopping 122 points, he understands entering the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is a fresh start.
“It’s kind of a weird thing to go from reigning (series) champion to complete rookie,” Foster recently admitted. “It’s a very stark difference.”
Foster’s journey in the INDYCAR series starts on familiar ground with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. However, facing 17 races with newly introduced tracks, longer distances, tire compounds, hybrid systems, and tighter pit boxes, Foster faces meaningful hurdles.
Adapting to INDYCAR’s Demands
INDYCAR boasts seasoned teams and drivers with a wealth of experience, presenting Foster with his greatest challenge yet. Every millisecond counts, as qualifying sessions are crucial. Just missing pace could lead to lower starting positions or, worse, missing the Indianapolis 500 altogether. Foster acknowledges that, “every tick of a second matters…a tenth of a second lost in a single-lap run can lead to a half-dozen lost starting positions.” His teammate, veteran driver Graham Rahal, experienced this firsthand last year.
foster, one of six drivers in INDY NXT history to amass 10 or more wins, admits to a shift in viewpoint.
“Being 10th last year,I would have put my head in the sand and cried,” he recalls.
While Foster boasts notable accolades from his previous victories, including claiming the Indy Pro 2000 championship in 2022, INDYCAR demands a different approach.
“I know that we’re not going to come out aiming for a pole…”, Foster said realistically.
Rahal cautions, “Louis is going to have an uphill battle just with the learning…speed is not going to be the problem, but pit stops, duration of the race, physicalities of the car, those things will all play a role.”
Past rookies have faced similar challenges. The highest finishing rookie in recent history was Felix Rosenqvist, finishing sixth in 2019. However, Foster’s ambition goes beyond simply trying to emulate that performance.
A Competitive Rookie Class
Foster joins a rookie class that includes formula 2 veteran Robert Shwartzman, as well as Jacob Abel, whom Foster raced against in INDY NXT. Notably, the three drivers showed promising pace during a recent test session at Sebring International Raceway, indicating a closely contested battle amongst newcomers.
“I think the same approach in every championship I’ve taken is the same one I’m going to take for INDYCAR. Obviously, it’s going to be a much bigger step than I’ve ever had before in terms of competition…we’ve worked really hard—the team, myself—in learning each other, getting to know each other, me trying to get the ball rolling immediately with the new things for myself that isn’t in INDY NXT, like fuel saving, pit stops, hybrid, all that stuff. Also just race distances.”
