The Darkness have recently released their new album, Dreams On Toast, packed wiht anthems reminiscent of their initial appeal, captivating listeners with its powerful sound. A notable aspect of Dreams On Toast is the unexpected cameo by actor Stephen Dorff, known for his roles in the Beatles biopic Backbeat and the TV series True Detective. Dorff contributes a spoken-word segment to the album’s closing track, Weekend In Rome.

The spoken segment includes the lines:

“Meandering like the Tiber, gand in hand, we scaled the Spanish Steps, the night air thick and sultry, I kiss you beneath the Italian moonlight… This was my dream.”

This intriguing collaboration raises the question of how Dorff, a Hollywood personality, became involved with the British rock band The Darkness.

Dorff recalls his initial appreciation for the band’s music:

“I know their music from way back. I thought they were a great rock band with Justin’s [Hawkins, singer] voice and flair and the crazy sense of humour. I like a lot of bands out of England but The Darkness had an edge.”

He explains that his connection with the band deepened through a friendship with their drummer, Rufus Taylor:

“About seven or eight years ago, Rufus [Taylor, Darkness drummer] and I met at a party and we hit it off and we’ve been good buddies ever since. I’ve seen them play a few times. I saw this great show they played live to the English veterans [the Royal hospital chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners]. It was The darkness and Toto – the wackiest show ever.”

This connection led to his involvement in the new album. Dorff describes how he ended up contributing to Weekend In Rome:

“I was in London for something, and I ended up going out to Dan’s studio where they were recording the album. They were doing Weekend In Rome,and they asked if I wanted to do it. justin was writing these words while we were there: ‘Can you say this, can you say it like this?’ They got me on a couple of othre songs too, but I think Weekend In Rome is the one that worked best, so that‘s the one they kept.”

The collaborative and spontaneous nature of the recording session is further highlighted by dorff’s description of Justin Hawkins’s creative direction:

“Justin was saying: ‘Just think of it as a dream, you’re on an airplane and you’re kind of sleepy and sad.’ He’s got a crazy brain and he’s such a great writer,and he kept giving me all of these great lines.”

Looking ahead, Dorff expresses enthusiasm about the possibility of performing live with The Darkness, stating, “yeah, I’d love to do that. That’d be fun.”

Anya Sharma: Stephen, thanks for joining us. your cameo on the Darkness’s new album, Dreams On Toast, was quite a surprise. How did this collaboration come about?

Stephen Dorff: Thanks for having me. Well, I’ve been aware of the Darkness for a while. I always thought they were a great rock band. I loved Justin Hawkins’ voice and that crazy sense of humour. you know, the English bands often have an edge. but the real connection started with Rufus [Taylor, Darkness drummer]. We met at a party about seven or eight years ago and hit it off. We’ve been mates ever as.

Anya Sharma: So, a friendship led to the recording session. What was it like being in the studio with The Darkness?

Stephen Dorff: I happened to be in London,and I popped into Dan’s studio where they were recording.They were working on “Weekend In Rome,” and they asked if I’d be up for it. Justin was just writing these words while we were there: ‘Can you say this? Can you say it like this?’ He’s a brilliant writer. And the creative freedom in the studio was great. Justin told me to approach it like a dream, like I was sleepy and sad on an airplane.

anya Sharma: The spoken-word segment on “Weekend In Rome” is definitely a highlight of the album. Justin Hawkins’s influence seems very prominent in the lyrics.

Stephen Dorff: Absolutely. Justin has a crazy brain. He kept giving me all these lines. “meandering like the Tiber…” Those lines are amazing. They tried me on a couple of other songs too, but “Weekend In Rome” was the one that really clicked.

Anya Sharma: Beyond the album, do you see any possibilities for future collaborations, perhaps even a live performance with The Darkness?

Stephen Dorff: (Laughing) Yeah, I’d love to do that! That would be so much fun. Anytime.

Anya Sharma: The collaboration blends the worlds of rock music and film interestingly. How do you think this creative fusion impacts the overall listening experience of Dreams On Toast?

Stephen Dorff: I think it gives it another dimension. it’s a bit unexpected, right? It adds another layer to the music. Hopefully, it makes the album even more memorable.

Anya Sharma: This collaboration proves that artistic connections can often be unexpected. What piece of advice would you give to young artists striving to embark on similar collaborative endeavours?

Stephen Dorff: Be open to opportunities, and be open to collaborating. You never know where a connection might lead. Meet talented people and just be natural.Don’t be afraid to try new things.And have fun with it.
