DEVELOPING: Massive Blackout Plunges Spain, portugal, and Parts of France into Darkness; Cause Remains Under Inquiry
MADRID — A widespread power outage struck Spain, Portugal, and parts of southern France on Monday, disrupting daily life for tens of millions and raising urgent questions about the stability of the region’s energy infrastructure. While power has been partially restored in some areas, large swaths of the Iberian Peninsula and southern france remained without electricity late into the evening, and the cause of the massive disruption remains unclear.
The blackout, which began midday local time, brought daily routines to a standstill. Subway systems ground to a halt, mobile phone service was interrupted, traffic lights went dark, causing gridlock in major cities, and ATMs ceased functioning, leaving residents scrambling for cash. However, critical infrastructure such as hospitals, nuclear power plants, and prisons were able to maintain operations through backup power systems.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the nation in a press conference Monday evening, acknowledging the unprecedented nature of the event. “A nationwide blackout of this scale has never happened before in Spain,” Sánchez stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He revealed that an enormous amount of power, equivalent to 60% of Spain’s total electricity demand, was lost in a matter of seconds. The Prime Minister reiterated that the cause is still under investigation and that authorities are considering all possibilities.
Earlier in the day, António Costa, President of the European Council and former Prime Minister of Portugal, addressed the possibility of a cyberattack via X, formerly known as Twitter. “There are no signs so far suggesting that a cyber attack” caused the blackout, Costa posted.
The sudden loss of power rippled across various sectors, impacting businesses, transportation, and public services.
