The ceremony of GLAAD Media Awards rewards works of all types (films, series and also comic books) for their fair representation of the LGBTQ community, and DC seems to be pushing harder on this with six nominations this year.
GLAAD Media Awards nominees
The animated series Harley Quinn focused a lot on the supervillain’s relationship with her crime partner Poison Ivy, and given the quality of the first two seasons, it’s no surprise to see her nominated for Best Comedy Series. In the best drama series we find again this year Supergirl from CW.
It is also four other nominations that we find in the category of the best comic book. Among the best comics to represent the LGBTQ community, we have Suicide Squad of Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo and Daniel Sampere, Far Sector of N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell, Lois Lane of Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins and You Brought Me the Ocean, the comic book young adult d’Alex Sanchez and Julie Maroh which directly addresses the themes of homosexuality.
Marvel is also present with the nominations of the comics Guardians of the Galaxy (Al Ewing, collective of artists), Empyre and its tie-ins around Hulkling (collective) and X-Factor (Leah Williams, David Baldeon). BOOM! Studios place Wynd (James Tynion IV, Michael Dialynas) and Juliet Takes a Breath (Gabby Rivera, Celia Moscote) and Random House Graphic the story The Magic Fish (Trung Le Nguyen). This category was won last year by Star Wars : Doctor Aphra, accepted by the author Si Spurrier, but who is absent from the candidates of this 32nd edition of the GLAAD Media Awards. The winners will be chosen later this year.
