An engine failure forces a Boeing machine to make an emergency landing. The cargo plane touches down on the water in front of Hawaii. The crew can be rescued, but one of the pilots is seriously injured.

A Boeing 737 cargo plane has made an emergency landing off the coast of Hawaii. The US Coast Guard rescued both crew members, the US Federal Aviation Administration said. The pilots reported engine failure and attempted to return to Honolulu. However, they were forced to land the Transair plane on the water around 02:30 in the morning. “The FAA and the US Transportation Safety Administration NTSB will be investigating the incident.”

The crew members were rescued by Coast Guard and Fire Brigade helicopters, a Coast Guard spokesman told CNN. A Coast Guard ship was also deployed. According to the spokesman, the two crew members were taken to a hospital in Honolulu for treatment.

According to a report by local news site Hawaii News Now, one of the pilots, a 58-year-old, is in intensive care with life-threatening injuries. The second pilot, aged 50, sustained a head injury and multiple lacerations. The plane sank, Hawaii News Now reported. The remains would be recovered. The Transair plane normally carries cargo between the main Hawaiian islands and was en route between Honolulu on Oahu and Kahului on Maui, according to FlightAware.

According to investigators, the plane is a Boeing 737 Classic that is at least 33 years old, not a 737 MAX. The Boeing 737 MAX made headlines with two crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2018 and 2019, killing 346 people. In March 2019, a worldwide flight ban was imposed on the US aircraft manufacturer’s former bestseller, which was only lifted at the end of 2020.
