Samsung Lions pitcher Kim Yun-soo (25) will be sidelined for an extended period after undergoing surgery for a right elbow injury. The surgery, performed at a domestic hospital, addressed ligament damage, including a tear in the flexion of the right elbow.

Kim Yun-soo had initially returned too the Okinawa camp on October 13th after a brief absence due to an elbow injury. However, during a bullpen session on October 12th, he experienced renewed pain in his right elbow. Medical examinations revealed a right elbow curvature damage, prompting further tests that ultimately led to the decision for surgery.

“Kim Yun-soo received medical staff finding surgery such as internal ligament injury in addition to the flexion of the flexion at the domestic hospital,” a statement from the samsung team read.

The surgery is expected to involve elbow ligament reconstruction, which means Kim Yun-soo is unlikely to pitch in the first group mound in 2025. His return to the mound is anticipated sometime during the 2026 season.

Well, it’s quite unfortunate, but after feeling some pain during a bullpen session in Okinawa, medical examinations revealed a curvature damage in my right elbow. Further tests showed ligament tears, including an internal ligament injury and a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). After consulting with the medical staff, we decided that surgery was the best course of action.

Archyde: Yoru surgery involved elbow ligament reconstruction. Can you share any details about the procedure and how it’s going so far?

Kim Yun-soo: Yes, the surgery was successful, and I’m feeling a bit better every day. The procedure involved using a tendon graft to replaced the damaged UCL, basically rebuilding the ligament structure in my elbow. Recovery is a long process, and I’ll be working closely with the team’s medical staff to ensure I’m back on the mound as soon as possible.

A Delayed Comeback: Kim Yun-soo’s Road to Recovery

Archyde: Recovery from such a serious injury can be challenging. How long do you anticipate being out, and what steps will you take to ensure a strong comeback?

Kim Yun-soo: Unluckily, with this kind of surgery, it might take about 12 to 18 months for a full recovery. I’m unlikely to pitch during the 2025 season, but I’m targeting a comeback in the 2026 season. During my rehabilitation, I’ll focus on maintaining a positive mindset, following the physical therapists’ guidance, and staying involved with the team as much as possible.
