A $50 million settlement in the MacBook butterfly keyboard class action. The end of a real industrial fiasco for the apple brand.

A federal court has issued its final decision, allowing the $50 million settlement in the class action lawsuit against Apple accusing the company of knowing and covering up the unreliable nature of the keyboards of its MacBooks, MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros released between 2015 and 2019. According to Archyde.comJudge Edward Davila described as “fair, adequate and reasonable” agreement reached for Apple’s “butterfly” keyboards. Under the terms of the latter, impacted MacBook users will receive compensation between $50 and $395. More than 86,000 claims for compensation had been filed before the deadline at the end of March, according to the judge.

Apple introduced the butterfly keyboard in 2015 with the 12-inch MacBook. At that time, former head of design, Jony Ive, explained that this mechanism would allow the Cupertino company to manufacture the thinnest laptops in the world without compromising stability or feeling during typing. As Apple integrated this butterfly keyboard into more and more of its machines, users began to realize that the keyboards were very exposed to dust and other small debris. The Apple brand had introduced many versions to make its mechanism more resistant before finally returning to a more conventional design with the 16-inch MacBook Pro at the end of 2019.

Apple will not, however, have to admit any wrongdoing under this agreement. Prior to this week, some members of the class action lawsuit had attempted to denounce the settlement, arguing that the $125 payout for one class action lawsuit was not enough, a request that Judge Davila denied. “The possibility that a better deal may have been reached or that the benefits offered under the deal do not unify the plaintiffs in the action are insufficient grounds for denying acceptance,” the judge wrote. The latter also rejected a request for compensation for MacBook owners who suffered keyboard failures, but who did not have their device repaired by Apple. No one knows when the plaintiffs will be able to receive their money, but the lawyers involved in the case said they were “looking forward to being able to return the money to [leurs] clients.”
