A South Korean triathlon coach was sentenced Friday, January 29, to seven years in prison for physically and mentally abusing athlete Choi Suk-hyeon, who committed suicide last year. This case is one of the most representative of a series of scandals of harassment and violence, sometimes sexual, in South Korean sport, an intensely competitive environment where deference to authority is expected. Choi Suk-hyeon, who won the bronze medal in the junior women’s event at the 2015 Asian Triathlon Championships in Taipei, was found dead in her team’s dormitory after suffering for years of physical abuse and verbal from the training staff and her teammates at her former club.
