“A bullfighter at the University should be something normal, we are not in the 19th century”

An approach to bullfighting from the solidarity, ecological and human point of view defines the final thesis of the young bullfighter Jorge Isiegas. “Bullfighting is, above all, an example of solidarity and sustainability,” says the right-handed man from Zaragoza, who studied at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the San Pablo CEU University in Madrid, and did not hesitate to combine his two passions, the business world and that of the bull, in the final degree project.

“I was lucky that my tutor is very bullfighting and she encouraged me to express, as a bullfighter, arguments that would reinforce the defense of bullfighting,” says Isiegas. He acknowledges that “sometimes it may seem that

that we dress in lights we are far from society, but by no means, and the proof is that as soon as there is a need we are there. Another thing is that our rhythm of life, which requires discipline and concentration, we can lose connection.

“It may seem that those of us who dress in lights are cut off from society, but this is not the case. As soon as there is a need, we are there »

He works in an office in the Madrid financial center, and he combines it with daily training and field trips, always “with his mind set on getting a contract for a bullfight, an opportunity to fulfill my dream.” Jorge Isiegas took a happy alternative in Zaragoza in the Pilar Fair of 2019 from the hands of El Juli and after the stoppage due to the pandemic, he keeps intact his illusions of succeeding in the arena.

He is not considered a strange creature for having passed through the Faculty and wearing the suit of lights at the same time: «I am not the only one, there are other colleagues who have also completed their careers, but it is not something generalized among those who want to be bullfighters, although in today’s society, a bullfighter at the university It should be something normal, that we are no longer in the nineteenth century. And he adds that “the more training, the better; studies are compatible and necessary, especially in such a difficult profession and with so many uncertainties such as bullfighting, you have to have springs because things don’t always go well ».

Sustainability example

‘Implication of bullfighting in Corporate Social Responsibility’ is the title under which the thesis directed by Dr. Cristina Isabel Dopacio, from the Department of Business Economics, is developed. “The objective of socially responsible companies is to contribute to social welfare, and hence the consequences and scope that the Fiesta has had since its origins to help improve society, sustainability and the economy of Spain”, and it is perhaps That is why “the interest in this show has been maintained for centuries and it has moved so many people, being a source of inspiration for so many artists and intellectuals.”

The work, rated with an excellent by the court, describes Corporate Civil Responsibility (CSR) and the Benefits that they suppose for a socially responsible company. And it frames bullfighting and all its actors in the framework of actions aimed at achieving benefits as a corporation or sector fully socially involved.

Wealth builder

“If we analyze what CSR means, it can be said that bullfighting is a pioneer in this field, since from its beginnings it was always linked to social and charitable purposes with the Houses of Mercy, starting a path that companies later joined ”, he highlights. One of the conclusions of the work indicates that the Fiesta “is also a source of economic wealth, since it creates decent jobs and provides the State with a significant volume of financial resources via taxes and Social Security.” In addition, the bullfighter explains that this wealth is created “respecting the environment and generating a minimal ecological footprint.”

Another of the reflections of Isiegas’s thesis refers to the «incalculable cultural content that has contributed and contributes bullfighting, and despite this it is the sector that receives the least aid and subsidies from the State. It also takes a tour of a multitude of cases in which the world of bullfighting turns to society to help and collaborate with countless associations and charities. “In this sense, festivals to get money for any cause or group in need have been a constant in the history of bullfighting, with the main figures always at the fore.”

In a final reflection, the right-handed young man expresses his hope of having “reflected the respect and love with which the bull is treated, which should not be forgotten that it is the axis of the Fiesta. That same respect towards the animal is that it exists towards people, of whatever age, sex, social position or ideology, without making distinctions to anyone. The bulls have been pioneers in this Corporate Social Responsibility that companies are now seeking, and in the three possible areas: social, environmental and economic ”.
