  • The Russian bombardments left twelve dead and forty injured Thursday in Sievierodonetsk, in the Luhansk region (east), Thursday, May 19, according to the local governor, Serhi Haïdaï. He said most of the shots hit apartment buildings and the death toll could rise.
  • Sievierodonetsk and Lyssytchansk constitute the last pocket of Ukrainian resistance in the Luhansk region. The Russians surround these two localities, separated by a river, and bombard them relentlessly. Also in the Donbass, the governor of the Donetsk region, Pavlo Kyrylenko, announced the death of five civilians on Thursday, killed according to him by Russian soldiers.
  • Thursday evening, the American Congress validated aid of 40 billion dollars (37.7 billion euros) for Ukraine. Within this envelope, 6 billion dollars should enable Ukraine to equip itself with armored vehicles and strengthen its anti-aircraft defence.
  • Joe Biden hosted, Thursday in Washington, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and Finnish President Sauli Niinistöto demonstrate, once again, their enthusiastic support for their country’s membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
  • Justice officials from five Western countries, forming the so-called “Five Eyes” alliance (United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and United Kingdom), announced Thursday that they support Ukraine’s legal action to try war crimes related to the Russian invasion. The ministers of justice or attorneys general said in a press release ” sustain “ action by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova, to hold accountable those responsible for “war crimes committed during the Russian invasion”. The trial has opened, a 21-year-old Russian sergeant is being prosecuted. He faces life imprisonment.
  • Moscow announced on Thursday the expulsion of five Portuguese diplomats, in retaliation for that of ten Russian diplomats decided by Lisbon in the wake of the Russian offensive in Ukraine. The Kremilin had already announced on Wednesday the expulsion of 34 French diplomats, 24 Italian diplomats and 27 Spanish diplomats.
  • The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that 1,730 Ukrainian soldiers holed up at the Azovstal steel site in Marioupol had surrendered since Monday. In the Luhansk region of the Donbass, at least twelve people were killed and forty others were injured in Sievierodonetsk.
  • Russia has announced that it wants to cut off Ukraine from its Zaporizhia nuclear power plantthe largest in Europe, occupied by the Russian army, unless kyiv pays Moscow for the electricity produced.
  • The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, stated that he was not in favor of granting Ukraine a ” shortcut “ with a view to joining the European Union, referring to a “imperative of fairness towards the six countries of the Western Balkans” who have wanted it for a long time.
  • The big moneymakers of the G7 met in Germany to try to keep Ukraine’s finances afloat and to assess the repercussions of the war on the world economy: inflation linked in particular to soaring energy prices, threats of a food crisis, the specter over-indebtedness of many developing countries.
