A first 100% electric snowmobile in Shawinigan?

A first 100% electric snowmobile, a project imagined by Taiga Motors, is in development and could soon be produced in Mauricie.

For now, the company is building its devices in its pilot plant in Montreal, but could very soon set up its assembly plant in Shawinigan, TVA Nouvelles has learned.

The plant is expected to produce more than 50,000 units per year, which would mostly create 50 jobs in the region.

The three co-founders of the company began their expertise five years ago, in the premises of the Shawinigan entrepreneurship center, when they had recently graduated from McGill University. Businessmen may wish to return to where they started.

The location revealed next week?

Taiga Motors has confirmed that it will release more details on the location of its plant. For its part, the City of Shawinigan did not want to take the guesswork out of the rest of the project, but several potential locations, such as the new Alice-Asselin industrial park in Saint-Georges-de-Champlain, would be large enough to accommodate a business of the sort.

In December 2020, the City assured that the potential of such a project would be quite natural for Shawinigan.

Especially since in mid-February, Taiga Motors benefited from a merger and a $ 200 million investment from a group in Vancouver to begin construction of a plant in Quebec.

The arrival of electric snowmobiles is eagerly awaited by businesses in the region.

“This is the future for outdoor enthusiasts! We have been sending emails to Taiga Motors for at least two years so that we can get their technology. It is clear that if we are talking about the same project which is in development, that would be positive for the region, ”said Maxime Gervais, co-owner of Maximum Location.

This April, Taiga Motors will go public on the Toronto Stock Exchange and will be worth more than half a billion dollars.

The region therefore hopes that the current will pass between it and this young company.
