YOGYAKARTA, iNews.id – Variants or new strains of the causative virus Covid-19 may appear in Indonesia. This was stated by an expert in Epidemiology from Gadjah Mada University (UGM) dr Bayu Satria Wiratama.
“The possibilities (new variant) is very big, but the possibility that we can detect it is not that big, “he said in Yogyakarta, Tuesday (23/2/2021).
According to him, efforts to detect the new variant could not be carried out optimally because the genomic surveillance activities of SARS COV-2 in the country were currently not optimal.
According to him, the systematic and ongoing analysis of the genomics of the new corona virus is still small. “Only about 0.03 percent of our entire sample is still small,” he said.
He conveyed that the potential for the emergence of a new strain of the virus that causes Covid-19 from Indonesia is quite large.
The reason is, he said, the transmission of Covid-19 in Indonesia is still active and quite extensive in various regions.
The contagion that occurs continuously, said Bayu, makes the potential for the virus to mutate even greater. Moreover, the SARS COV-2 virus is a type of RNA virus like influenza virus that mutates easily.
“The most serious impact is that we will continue to develop vaccines. Because the mutations have never been efficiently stopped by the previous vaccines and transmission will continue,” he said.
