It was a little after 4 p.m. when, due to heavy rains, water poured down towards the center of the village of Hautrage, around the square and into the streets nearby. The firefighters intervened.
“All the water coming from Sirault has flowed towards the Place d’Hautrage, which forms a basin, confirms the adjutant of the firefighters of Saint-Ghislain Marcel Bauwens. Usually the ditch drains relatively well but here the precipitation was really heavy. We have unlocked everything and several residents have also set up their pumping system. Three or four houses were particularly affected. There are no injuries to deplore. The phenomenon was frequent 15 years ago. A retention basin had been built but here everything fell suddenly. “
Around 6:30 p.m., the water began to recede. In front of Sébastien Huvelle’s house, Place d’Hautrage, several people were evacuating the water with squeegees and buckets. “We were going shopping when we noticed the water on our storefront around a good 4pm. As we walked a bit, we saw a huge body of water in the street that overlooks the square, comments Sébastien. We decided not to take the car and to act quickly and we did well. The water quickly rose to 30 centimeters in front but we placed a dam with bags and boards so that it does not enter the house. I am from Sirault and I had already known that 23 years ago. We just moved in here just three months ago. Fortunately, there is more fear than harm. “
In the end, the water just got a little into the bathroom and stopped at the first step in the cellar. Sébastien and his family were also able to count on the support of residents who came to ask them if they needed help.
