New allegations of sexual misconduct targeting a Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) team in the first half of the 1990s were reported to league authorities last weekend, its acting commissioner Martin Lavallée said. in parliamentary committee on Tuesday.

When I was informed of the situation, we went on a quest for information which quickly led to the establishment of an independent investigation to ensure we got to the bottom of it.he said.

For the sake of confidentiality of the alleged victim, Mr. Lavallée preferred not to indicate which formation of the LHJMQ was targeted.

Michel Dorais, retired full professor from the School of Social Work and Criminology at Laval University, as well as Mario Cecchini, future commissioner of the QMJHL, are participating in today’s hearing.

The parliamentary committee had begun its work last month with, in particular, the testimony of the former commissioner of the QMJHL, Gilles Courteau, who had resigned in stride. Mr. Courteau had affirmed before the commission that no case of sexual abuse mentioned in a class action filed in 2020 concerned his league, while a plaintiff had reported having suffered such abuse during his time in the QMJHL in the years 1990.

Work continues Wednesday and Thursday. Coach Danièle Sauvageau, former New Brunswick premier Camille Thériault and president of the QMJHL members’ assembly Richard Létourneau, among others, are expected to attend.

More details to come.
