A 30-year-old nurse was stabbed to death on Thursday, February 13, in stabbing gunshot by a patient at a psychiatric unit in Thouars, Deux-Sèvres.
The nurse, a mother of two, was assaulted by a 20-year-old patient who sought to leave this psychiatric unit at the Center hospitalier Nord Deux-Sèvres. He stabbed her in the chest, failing to also injure another nurse. Helicoptered to Poitiers University Hospital, the young woman died in the afternoon.
Alleged perpetrator in police custody
The alleged 20-year-old attacker, who has been interned for a fortnight, was arrested and taken into police custody after being seen by a psychiatrist.
“An investigation into flagrancy has been opened for murder and attempted murder of persons charged with a public service mission”, announced the prosecution. The investigation was entrusted to the Poitiers judicial police. “One of the priorities of the investigation is how the suspect obtained a stabbed weapon”, specified Natacha Rateau, public prosecutor in Niort.
“This kind of escape attempt happens regularly, but it was impossible to foresee that this patient would be armed with a knife”, observed one of the victim’s colleagues. “This highlights the lack of resources of the hospital in general and of psychiatry in particular”, he denounced.
