Jesus Zambrano Grijalva, national president of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) demanded the Mexican government clarify the legal status with which General Salvador Cienfuegos will return to Mexico.

After the US authorities dropped the charges against the former head of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) to leave him in the hands of the Mexican justice, the PRD leader said that everything was “A montage for electoral purposes, that Mexico was simply part of a game and I think things are very delicate that must be clarified”.

In this sense, Zambrano Grijalva insisted that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) “must say in what legal situation will you re-enter Mexico General Cienfuegos and everything that needs to be clarified is derived from there, ”he warned.

In addition to this, he reiterated that it should be transparent “If he arrives accused of the United States before the FGR and, therefore, if he would remain in their custody.”

He warned that in Mexico there is no charge against the retired general and that Mexican society deserves to have real information on the crimes he is accused of.

However, the politician trusted that, if the investigation folder delivered by the United States justice includes crimes as serious as organized crime Y drug trafficking, the Mexican authorities should take the corresponding legal measures.

Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda was arrested on October 15 at the Los Angeles International Airport, in California. The accusations against him were three relating to conspiracy to manufacture, import and distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as a money laundering charge.

The arrest and investigation was carried out without giving notice to the Mexican authorities, because according to Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE), he was the ambassador Christopher Landau who notified him of the event.

Six days later, Ebrard and Landau held a meeting in which the foreign minister noted the discontent of the Mexican government for not being aware in advance of the investigations against the former secretary.

On October 28, the SRE sent a diplomatic note to the US embassy expressing its “deep astonishment” because no data was shared, regardless of whether the general was guilty or innocent.

“Thanks to the close relationship between @TheJusticeDept Y #FGR, our North American counterpart made the decision to request the Judge to dismiss the criminal charges against Salvador Cienfuegos, to be investigated and, where appropriate, processed in accordance with Mexican law.”, reported the FGR through its Twitter account.

@TheJusticeDept has provided Mexico with evidence and is committed to continuing cooperation, within that framework, to support investigations by Mexican authorities. In this way, our countries remain committed to cooperation in this matter.

Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón pointed out that the United States will hand over Cienfuegos Zepeda in an act of respect for the sovereignty of the country.

“It means that it will continue its process in Mexico, that the mexican laws, because the crimes committed were carried out in Mexican territory ,presumably; means that it will have to be tested, it means that bases of cooperation and security with the US should be maintained, always respecting the sovereignty of Mexico”Informed the Mexican Foreign Minister at a press conference.
