African swine fever vaccine obtains “promising” results in France

It’s a disease harmless to humans but deadly to pigs and wild boars and leads to preventive felling to prevent its spread.

France is the third European producer of pork and has no cases. But the virus is circulating in Italy, among wild boars, as well as in Germany and other countries in Eastern Europe.

A long-awaited vaccine solution

During its research on a viral strain circulating in Europe (Georgia 2007/1), a laboratory of the health agency Anses “fortuitously” highlighted a “attenuated strain” you virus: “This only caused a slight fever in the infected animal whereas infection with the Georgia strain is generally fatal in 100% of cases”, said ANSES in a publication on its website.

It is also pointed out in the publication that “the vaccine developed by ANSES scientists has the advantage of not being produced by genetic manipulation, which would facilitate the authorization of its use in nature”, insofar as “wild boars would probably be the first target for the vaccine in Western Europe”

Last year, Vietnam announced that it had succeeded for the first time in developing a vaccine, in partnership with American researchers. It should initially be reserved for its domestic market.
