Sad end of the year for operation “Barkhane”. Monday, three soldiers of the 1isregiment of hunters were killed during an escort mission between Hombori and Gossi in Mali, an area where RVIM, a subsidiary of al-Qaida, is rife. Their light armored vehicle (LAV) was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED). These bombs planted along the roads, triggered by the passage of vehicles by their weight or from a distance, are responsible for a large part of the losses of the “Barkhane” force, deployed in the Sahel since 2014 to contain jihadist groups. Last week, on Christmas Eve, two soldiers were injured at the Gao base, after an altercation between alcoholic soldiers. One was repatriated to France, as was the person responsible for the shooting. The bad news is mounting, even though the face of “Barkhane” has changed in the past year.
