FDP politician gives up candidacy for judgeship

At the beginning of October, the Brandenburg Liberals proposed Karoline Preisler from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as a candidate for the state constitutional court in Potsdam. Then a scandal draws the focus on the private life of the FDP politician – or rather on that of her long-term partner.
The FDP politician and lawyer Karoline Preisler has given up her candidacy for the office of constitutional judge in the state of Brandenburg. “Hello friends, dear community, I have just declared that I will not run for the #Constitutional Court in #Brandenburg, because the focus as a constitutional judge should always be on the office and not on the person”, writes Preisler on Twitter. “I wish the candidates all the best!” The Brandenburg FDP had nominated her for the volunteer position.
Recently it became known that Preisler’s longtime partner, the FDP member of the Bundestag Hagen Reinhold, is now in a relationship with the former porn actress and current entrepreneur Annina Semmelhaack. According to a report by the news portal “t-online”, Semmelhaack had completed an internship in Reinhold’s office as part of a women’s promotion program. In addition, there was much speculation in numerous reports as to whether Preisler and Reinhold were still a couple when he and Semmelhaack started dating. Preisler herself commented publicly on this in the “Bild”, but did not explicitly mention the facts in her statement about the waiver of the candidacy.
In an email informed Preisler “t-online” according to now FDP country chief Zyon Braun that she is no longer available for the post. She decided “after a long struggle” not to “uphold” the candidacy. “Events in my private life and reports about them have currently made headlines,” writes Preisler accordingly. “In order to avert damage to the dignity of the office of a constitutional judge and my democratic homeland, I am no longer standing for election.” It was “an honor” for her to be nominated. Preisler announced that he would continue to work “for a liberal and well-fortified democracy”.
Preisler wanted to stand for election to succeed director Andreas Dresen at the state constitutional court. The “Tagesspiegel” reportsHowever, after hearing the applicant in the main committee, it had already become clear that Preisler had no chance of getting the two-thirds majority required for the election.
