Against Liverpool.. the final that changed the Real Madrid shirt forever

Hours before the expected date between Liverpool and Real Madrid for the European Champions League final, the newspaper “”MarkTo a historic final that brought the two teams together on the same occasion, and in the French capital, Paris, 41 years ago.

On May 27, 1981, on the eve of the final match against Liverpool, Real Madrid witnessed major changes, most notably the official kit for playing.

The match that took place that evening saw the Spanish team ditch their all-white kit and, for the first time, wore an adidas kit with three purple stripes on the sleeves and sides of the shorts.

Before the match, Real Madrid broke a 79-year-old tradition with an Adidas kit for 17 million pesetas, the Spanish currency at the time, (just over 102,000 euros).

The new jersey and kit were presented at the Intercontinental Hotel in Paris on the eve of the match.

However, in the final in the Parc des Princes, the new Real Madrid shirts did not bear the German brand logo, due to then-UEFA laws, as there were television restrictions preventing the advertisement of the clothing.

Because of the laws, Liverpool had to cover the logo of the English company Umbro with white patches.

“There was an hour before the final and we were walking around with scissors and white patches covering each other’s shirts,” said former Liverpool player Alan Kennedy.

According to the player, Liverpool coach Bob Paisley was urging his players to focus on the match and forget about the ads.

It is noteworthy that Liverpool won the match with a single goal scored by Alan Kennedy.

And tomorrow, Saturday, in the final match at the same French stadium, Real Madrid is looking to enhance its record of 13 titles, while Liverpool wants to win the cup for the seventh time.
