Agreement for Brexit: “We have regained control of our destiny,” says Boris Johnson

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson proclaimed this Thursday that his country «has regained control over its laws and its destiny‘By reaching an agreement to define the post-Brexit trade relationship between the UK and the European Union (EU). Speaking from his Downing Street residence, Johnson said the pact reached “will protect jobs” in the UK and allow it to be “an independent coastal state with full control of its waters” for the first time since 1973.

The deal “accomplishes something that the people of this country instinctively knew was feasible, but were told was impossible. We have regained control of our laws and our destiny. We have regained control of every bit of our regulation completely and without restrictions. Since January 1, we are outside the customs union and the single market, “he said.

Despite describing the negotiations with the community club as “fierce”, Johnson has considered that the agreement “is good for the EU” and recalled that it is the “largest trade agreement” signed by his country, with 668,000 million pounds ( 742,000 million euros)

It is, in his view, a “comprehensive agreement in the style of Canada, which will protect jobs, allow us to sell British products without tariffs or quotas in the EU market, and allow our companies to do even more business with our European friends” .

Johnson stressed that his country will be “independent” of community legislation and European courts to be able to promote its own laws and new standards, and “innovate in all sectors, from bioscience to finance or artificial intelligence.”

However, he has admitted that the agreement does not go as far as he “would have liked” in the section on mutual access to financial services. Yet he hopes the City of London will “prosper like never before” in the years to come.

Minutes before appearing in public, Johnson celebrated the agreement, after four and a half years of negotiations after the Brexit referendum in 2016, with a message on Twitter in which his photo appeared with arms raised and thumbs up, with the text: “An agreement has been reached.”
