Ever since the release of the order appointing Sriram Venkataraman, the Joint Secretary of the Health Department, as Alappuzha District Collector, there has been a huge protest. The opposition was angered by the decision to appoint a person accused in a murder case in charge of the entire district. Due to this, the position of the leadership is that it is not possible to accept the appointment of Sriram Venkataraman as the collector. The Congress organized a dharna in front of the Collectorate raising this matter. Dharna was inaugurated by KPCC General Secretary AA Shukur.

Meanwhile, Sunni organizations and Muslim League have come forward against the appointment. The state and district leaders of the Journalist Union have also protested against this. The main criticism leveled against the government’s action is that the District Magistrate being accused will destroy the people’s faith in the rule of law.
AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal MP and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala MLA also criticized the appointment yesterday. The decision of Sunni organizations in the district is to organize a strong protest if the state government does not withdraw the appointment order and if necessary approach the court.
