All I own are gifts from my husband

The wife of the ousted Sudanese President, Omar al-Bashir, returned to the fore again, after appearing before a judge of the Corruption Court in the capital, Khartoum, to clarify some issues related to accusations of owning land and real estate through illegal enrichment.

The judge of the Corruption Court in Khartoum, Moez Babiker, questioned today, Sunday, Al-Bashir’s wife, Wedad Babiker Which confirmed that most of her possessions are gifts from her current husband and an oath she bought with money from her ex-husband.

Babiker also made it clear in her response to the judge’s private questions about her possession of a number of housing units, that she obtained 6 of them through a gift from Al-Bashir after the latter sold a housing unit in the upscale Kafoury neighborhood, according to what Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath correspondent reported.

She also added that he bought 12 units for their price in another neighborhood, and gave 6 of them to his first wife, and another 6 that he registered in her name. She indicated that she had bought two other units from the dues of her ex-husband, Ibrahim Shams El-Din, after his death.

Jewelry and gifts

As for the jewelry she owned, she said that she had obtained them as gifts from her former and current husband, as well as gifts from the husbands of her daughters, noting that she had evidence that all the land and jewelry she had obtained came through legitimate means.

For his part, Hashem Abu Bakr Al-Jaali, the lawyer for Al-Bashir’s wife, told Al-Arabiya/Al-Hadath that he expected the judge to press charges against Al-Bashir’s wife.

He also added that he has “a line of defense that will prove that his client obtained the housing units by legitimate means.”

The court is expected to decide in its session next Sunday whether it will file charges of corruption and illicit enrichment or dismiss the case.

The fight against wealth

Wedad Babiker is facing charges of transgressing and owning residential lands and real estate, in violation of Article 7 of the Anti-Haram Wealth Law, and has been under house arrest since her earlier release due to her health condition.

It is noteworthy that the Prosecution of Unlawful and Suspicious Wealth, in Sudan, had ordered in December 2019 to place the wife of the ousted Sudanese president, under arrest, to investigate reports related to corruption files, including the acquisition of land in the Kafouri suburb of Khartoum North.

For years, suspicions and accusations have revolved among the Sudanese about the second wife of the imprisoned Sudanese president, who has been hidden from view since the overthrow of the Bashir regime on April 11, 2019.
