the armed forces sends on Monday night the first A400M transport aircraft to Afghanistan to evacuate German citizens from the capital Kabul. Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) told television station n-tv on Sunday that the machines would take off from the Wunstorf military airport near Hanover. From there, the machines would, among other things, fly the staff of the German embassy to a “third country” that they did not name. A “hub” will be set up there, from which there will then be an “airlift” to Germany. The transport from the third country to Germany takes place with civilian machines.
The Bundeswehr was prepared for all situations during the evacuation in Afghanistan. “We are set up for all scenarios,” says Kramp-Karrenbauer. “We know that this is a very difficult situation for the local people, but also for the soldiers. It is a dangerous mission that we are now sending them on. ”The aim is to get as many people out of Afghanistan as possible.
