Alstom wins a big contract in the United States, 130 Citadis trams sold

The French manufacturer Alstom indicated Thursday, June 1 that it would supply 130 trams to Philadelphia, in the United States, a contract of 718 million Canadian dollars (496 million euros). The contract also includes an option for the acquisition of 30 additional trams, according to a press release.

Alstom will supply the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (Septa) with Citadis-type trams – its flagship model which equips most French cities, but also Casablanca, Dubai, Frankfurt, Ottawa, Rotterdam, Rio de Janeiro or Sydney -, adapted to the local climate and made in the USA.

Philadelphia has an extensive 110 km long streetcar network, which is rather archaic but is undergoing a major renovation program. The current vehicles, supplied by Japanese Kawasaki, date from the early 1980s.
