Although we live with chronic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis, there are other diseases that the elderly fear the most. That’s ‘dementia’. As the elderly population increases, the number of dementia patients has also increased significantly. Dementia is a typical disease that causes intellectual disability and is accompanied by emotional disturbance. They do not recognize their children, nor do they recognize their close friends. If it is severe, it can lead to a terrible situation in which not only you but also your family and acquaintances can suffer. Even for a healthy old age, we need to be wary of dementia.

Middle-aged forgetfulness, a sign of Alzheimer’s disease?

There are various types of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and Parkinson’s disease. The most common disease is Alzheimer’s disease. The scary thing about Alzheimer’s disease is that the symptoms progress gradually, and as time goes by, it is accompanied by cognitive impairment. If you often forget something or don’t remember a word while speaking, even if you look fine on the outside, it is worth suspecting as an early symptom. It is absolutely forbidden to dismiss it as forgetfulness due to simple aging. This is because Alzheimer’s disease is irreversible if not managed at an early stage.

If it becomes severe during the course of the process, psychological abnormalities such as personality changes and increased aggression occur. As the symptoms worsen, it is difficult to take care of the patient’s own physical health, so complications such as various infectious diseases and bedsores are bound to occur. For this reason, people with severe Alzheimer’s usually have a caregiver. However, caring for a patient whose symptoms have already worsened is not easy for even a family member, and all members suffer. Moreover, it is still difficult to cure, and there are only drugs that improve symptoms rather than fundamental treatment, so it is best to manage and prevent it before it is too late. So, what causes Alzheimer’s disease? So far, beta-amyloid and taura have been known to be important etiological factors for Alzheimer’s disease. Beta-amyloid is a substance that exists in the nerve cells of the brain. The academic theory is that Alzheimer’s occurs when amyloid plaques have a detrimental effect on brain cells. According to the actual experimental results, it was confirmed that the deposition of beta-amyloid significantly increased in adults over 60 years of age. In a cohort study conducted in the Netherlands, patients with cognitive impairment with amyloid plaques also had a higher incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. The older you are, the higher your risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

The second etiological factor, tau, is similar. In general, tau is a beneficial substance that maintains the skeleton of nerve cells called neurons in the brain and supplies nutrients. However, if tau is abnormally folded, it entangles nerve fibers, and as this process continues, nerve fiber bundles are formed and deposited in nerve cells. In this case, the function of the brain is damaged. When the brain tissue of Alzheimer’s disease patients is examined under a microscope, amyloid plaques and nerve fiber bundles are observed.

Pharmaceutical companies have been researching treatments that target the etiological factors in order to develop a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. By referring to ongoing studies, a solution to Alzheimer’s disease can be found in beta-amyloid and tau.

Prevention is the best, protein intake is important

Alzheimer’s disease has no clear cure yet. For this reason, recent studies are trying to deal with it from a preventive point of view. This study was conducted at Edith Cowan University in Australia. Researchers looked at the diets of 541 Australians and measured levels of beta-amyloid. Those who ate a high-protein diet had a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Those who ate about 118 grams of protein per day were 12 times less likely to have higher levels of beta-amyloid than those who ate only 54 grams of protein.

The average protein intake known to the general public and athletes is between 1.2 and 1.4 g/kg. For example, if you weigh 60 kg, you need to consume 72 to 84 g of protein. However, in this study, the deposition rate of beta-amyloid was high even with the moderate intake of 79.85 g. This suggests that the deposition rate can be lowered by consuming a higher protein content than the average in the case of the elderly.

In a similar experiment, there is also a study showing that a low-protein diet is dangerous. In an animal experiment in mice fed a low-protein diet, it did not protect against neuronal inflammation caused by tau, a pathological factor in Alzheimer’s disease, compared to mice fed a normal protein diet.

Taken together, it can be seen that protein intake plays an important role in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Dietary control is essential because regular intake of protein can significantly lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Low molecular weight, plant-based protein recommended

In general, protein intake in old age is insufficient. Most people do not know the importance of protein intake, and some people do not know whether protein intake is important in preventing Alzheimer’s disease. Even when choosing protein, it is cumbersome to check how much protein is in the food.

In old age, teeth are generally not strong, so it is difficult to chew protein foods that are tough like meat and require a chewing process. As we get older, the digestive enzymes in our body decrease, so even if we eat high-protein foods, our body cannot fully digest them. Protein-rich foods such as lean meat and soybeans have a very large protein molecular weight. If a person with poor digestive function consumes protein as food, it cannot be sufficiently decomposed and absorbed in the small intestine. Even undigested protein can strain the kidneys or cause diarrhea in severe cases.

If you find it difficult to eat a protein-based diet, you can consume low-molecular-weight protein. In general, the particles of protein naturally present in food are very large. Low-molecular-weight proteins are proteins that have been broken down for easy digestion. Therefore, even the elderly who cannot digest protein completely due to lack of digestive enzymes can effectively absorb protein.

Low molecular weight protein products are usually derived from milk and soybeans. However, because Koreans are lactose intolerant, consuming milk can cause stomach upset, so it is recommended to consume soybean-derived protein. Low-molecular-weight protein made from soybeans is easy on the stomach and not burdensome when ingested, but there are points to be aware of when choosing a product. Since some soy proteins may have genetically modified products, you should check whether they are non-GMO or non-GMO products without the risk of genetic manipulation before purchasing.

As the protein market grows, low-molecular-weight proteins are also being released in a variety of liquids, bars, and powders.
