Amazon France agrees to postpone “Black Friday” to December 4

Postpone “Black Friday” for a week? A meeting scheduled for Bercy on Friday should make it possible to decide on this hypothesis, relatively well received by professionals, provided that this delay allows shops to reopen earlier.

A major player in this consumer holiday, Amazon is ready to postpone it by one week in France, as requested by the government, said the boss of the French subsidiary of the e-commerce group on Thursday, November 19. “We have decided to postpone the date of“ Black Friday ”if this allows businesses and physical stores to reopen before the 1is December “, said on TF1 the general manager of Amazon France, Frédéric Duval. This promotional operation, initially scheduled for November 27, will finally take place on December 4, he said.

The Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, on Wednesday asked those involved in the distribution of “Shift” this massive operation. The negotiations seem to be going well: after a first meeting around Bruno Le Maire on Thursday morning, Bercy indicated that a “New exchange” with the actors concerned was planned “Tomorrow [vendredi] at 3 pm, with a view to finalizing an agreement ”.

“Welcoming the spirit of responsibility”

“I would like to salute the spirit of responsibility of the distributors and the online trade who have accepted to consider favorably the proposal that I made”, commented Thursday the Minister of the Economy, during a trip to Dourdan (Essonne). “We made good progress this morning, we are continuing the work. There is a great deal of technical, logistical and legal work to be done for this decision to be effectively taken ”, he said.

Distribution specialists seem to take the government’s demand positively, but only on condition that it leads to the rapid opening of stores… and that it is respected by everyone.

“We said this morning that we were ready to sit down at the negotiating table, discuss the different options and that we agreed to be flexible and adapt to the minister’s request to the extent that a convergence s ‘would organize within the profession’, explained Thursday the CEO France of the Japanese Rakuten, Fabien Versavau, making this last point a “Absolutely imperative condition”.

Another key point: “This postponement is not an end in itself and it should above all not be used as an excuse for an extension of the closure of shops”, underline the Merchants and Craftsmen of the Metropolises of France (CAMF), the French Federation of Merchant Associations (FFAC), the National Council of Shopping Centers (CNCC), the National Federation of Town Centers (FNCV) and the Confederation of Traders of France (CDF). The “Top priority” remains the reopening of shops on November 27.

International operation

For their part, the players in mass distribution say they are ready to organize the delay in promotions, always on condition that this makes it possible to reopen all shops as quickly as possible. “System U is in favor of the compromise being discussed […] to allow a serene and secure reopening of all shops from Saturday November 28 ”, declared its president, Dominique Schelcher, on Twitter. The boss of Carrefour, Alexandre Bompard, has also given his agreement to suspend “Black Friday” in order to promote the reopening of small businesses, the group said, confirming information from BFMTV.

However, some have reservations. The president of Medef, Geoffroy Roux de Bézieux, estimated on RTL that he was ” not reasonable “ to want to postpone “Black Friday” eight days before. “Black Friday” “Is an international commercial operation, it is as if we decided to stop the rising tide, in my opinion it is illusory”, commented, for his part, François Asselin, president of the CPME (small and medium-sized enterprises), in the program “Ecorama” of Boursorama.

Coming from the United States, the “Black Friday” is a private initiative promotional operation. Unlike the dates of the sales, the government has no control over the holding of this operation, which is increasingly popular in Europe every year.
