An African summit on water and sanitation, on the sidelines of the World Water Forum (minister)

Diamniadio, Oct 14 (APS) – Macky Sall will organize a summit of African Union heads of state and government on the sidelines of the 9th World Water Forum scheduled for March 21-26 in Dakar, with a view to the ‘attainment of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) relating to water, announced Thursday the Minister of Water and Sanitation.

International institutions are associated with the organization of the summit, said Serigne Mbaye Thiam during a meeting held in Diamniadio (west), for the preparations for the forum.

The African Union summit will give “ an exceptional political and diplomatic scope ” to the forum scheduled for 2022 in Diamniadio, about thirty kilometers from Dakar, according to Mr. Thiam.

“The challenge is certainly immense, but we can and must set together (…) the basis for transformative actions of this new commitment in favor of water and sanitation”, he stressed.

To support hydraulic policies, Macky Sall has also decided to dwell on the issue of water, when he will assume the rotating presidency of the African Union in 2022-2023, according to Serigne Mbaye Thiam.

Senegal and the World Water Council have decided, he announced, to involve governments, parliamentarians, administrative authorities and international organizations in charge of hydraulic policies in the efforts made to achieve the water-related aspects of the SDGs.

“We must mobilize more and mobilize (…) the international community”, added the Minister of Water and Sanitation, stressing “the urgency to act effectively to put an end to the crisis of ‘water”.

He spoke of the need to “support the innovations essential to solve water and sanitation problems in a comprehensive and sustainable way”.

Serigne Mbaye Thiam believes that “African and international institutions have understood this”.

According to him, young people, researchers, parliamentarians, women’s associations, representatives of local authorities, civil society associations and the private sector are all interested in the 9th World Water Forum.

It is perhaps because “the expectations are high for the success of this great meeting”, he said.
