An Egyptian captures an Israeli? .. A picture from the October War causes confusion

Like wildfire, a picture has spread over the past two days showing an Egyptian soldier capturing another Israeli during the October 1973 war that Egypt and Syria launched against Israel.

Many users circulated the image, asserting that it was of two soldiers who paid an Israeli soldier to capture him during the war.

The caption accompanying the photo read, “Saturday, October 6, 1973 AD, corresponding to Ramadan 10, 1393 AH.”

Military training or capture operation?!

However, the picture is completely wrong, and in fact it shows an Egyptian soldier playing the role of an Israeli prisoner during an Egyptian army training.

Nor does it ever document moments of war, as the research showed that it was published on the Getty Images agency.

The accompanying comment stated that it was taken on January 10, 1973, and shows an Egyptian soldier playing the role of an Israeli soldier during military exercises.

“October War”

It is noteworthy that in October 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel in the Sinai and the Golan Heights, with the aim of forcing it to return the lands it had seized during the June 1967 war.

The conflict ended in Egypt’s favour, as it succeeded in achieving a breach against the Israeli army, which was deployed along the Suez Canal before Israel regained control of the canal.
