  • Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York said on Sunday that Elon Musk’s ventilators cannot be made in time to help during the worst outbreak of the coronavirus.

  • “Nobody can make you a ventilator in two weeks,” said Cuomo. “This is General Motors, this is Ford, this is Elon Musk. I don’t care how big and how powerful you can’t make fans so quickly because there are parts that have to come from other countries.”

  • Musk asked Tesla engineers to make fan parts from auto parts. Tesla released a video on Sunday about the company’s progress to date.

  • Musk was pronounced during the Corona virus outbreak in the United States by tweeting misinformation about the virus and delivering ventilators to hospitals across the country.

Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York said on Sunday that Tesla’s ventilators will not be ready in time to help lead the new outbreak of the New York coronavirus outbreak.

During Cuomo’s daily press conference in Albany, the governor was asked if he had had discussions with Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk about whether the Buffalo plant to manufacture fans would be reopened. The company released a video from Tesla engineers on Sunday showing how they make fans from auto parts.

Cuomo’s top advisor Melissa DeRosa noted that as Tesla tries to start up to get things going as soon as possible, nothing has happened yet. She also said Tesla is talking about making only part of the ventilator, not the entire device.

Cuomo noted that any new ventilator production is held up by supply chain problems.

“Nobody can make you a ventilator in two weeks,” said Cuomo. “This is General Motors, this is Ford, this is Elon Musk. I don’t care how big and how powerful you can’t make fans so quickly because there are parts that have to come from other countries.”

This production schedule means that all Tesla-made ventilators will not be ready in time for the New York State outbreak to peak, Cuomo said.

“Frankly, your timeframe doesn’t work for our immediate top, because whether we speak two or ten days, you won’t be making ventilators at this point,” said Cuomo.

Cuomo said on Sunday that New York may peak, as the number of deaths a day from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, fell from 630 to 594 between Saturday and Sunday. It is not clear whether the outbreak has occurred reached a plateau in New York or if the number of deaths per day will continue to decrease.

Ventilators are vital for patients with the most extreme effects of the virus on the respiratory system, and there is a serious shortage of devices in the United States. Musk, who was pronounced during the outbreak in the United States, has shared his efforts to procure ventilators, deliver 1,000 ventilators to California hospitals, and deploy ventilators for Henry Ford health care system on Michigan and Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx.

However, Musk was also faced with backlashes from delivering non-invasive ventilators, called BiPAP devices, to a New York City hospital. The devices have traditionally been used to treat conditions like sleep apnea, and health experts previously warned that they could increase the risk of transmission of the virus. Cuomo has since announced that the Ministry of Health has approved a process for converting BiPAP machines into ventilators.
