A season in hell is not the title of a film, but what Angers SCO has just experienced. From the court cases that occupy the owner of the club, to the recent condemnation of a player, passing by results on the ground which send the club in Ligue 2, the image of the club has been seriously tarnished. Teddy Kefalas, the delegate president who arrived in April, has work to do. He knows it. And he talks about it in this issue of #USBFOOT
Before mentioning the name of Angers SCO, it was to refer to the stability, to the small budget (of Ligue 1) which succeeds without too many means, to this famous “Angevine slab” which can take you far, such as this Coupe de France final in 2017. But that was before.
The image of the SCO version 2022-2023 reflects something else, which is much less dreamy. On the ground first. Between the 2022 summer transfer window which did not work, a coach (Baticle) ejected, another (Bouhazama) who does not find the solution on the ground and sees himself ousted following shocking remarks (we will come back to this), and players unable to win (Angers SCO has 27 defeats in 37 days), the descent into league 2 has been in effect since May.
And on the extra sports field, business poisoned the 2022-2023 season.
The Ilyes Chetti case first. Tried in April in appearance on prior admission of guilt, he was sentenced to four months in prison suspended for touching a young woman during an evening in a discotheque. Facts serious enough to be qualified as sexual assault. On May 31, 2022, he was dismissed by the club. This story is not just limited to Ilyes Chetti, since the Angevin coach Abdel Bouhazama, in the locker room, before a match, had this comment about the charges against Chetti and before he was sentenced: “It’s not mean, we’ve all touched girls before!“. Comment which had leaked in the press and which had earned Abdel Bouhazama an express exit from the locker room and the coaching position.
This in a context where Said Chabane, owner of the club, is also in turmoil. Suspected of money laundering in an organized gang and illegal exercise of player agent, Saïd Chabane is summoned June 7 before the court of Bobigny to know his date of appearance. And he will appear a week later, on June 14 this time, for the sexual assault case for which he is indicted. Two cases for which he is presumed innocent.
