Police officers opened an investigation after receiving images of a violent verbal assault from a couple who refused to wear a mask and who attacked a grocery store employee in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
“Esti de conne”, “Shut your mouth”, “a real stain”, here are some insults received by an employee of a “Super C” who simply asked a couple to put a face covering inside the store where she works.
The two anti-mask lovers filmed and broadcast their sad spectacle on Facebook last week. In the four-minute video footage, the employee calls 911 to report the two lovebirds to the police.
The couple violently denigrates the young woman, laughing at her and her accent. “She talks like a hen,” laughs a man who identifies on social media as “Mike Dkoto” and who is behind this streak with his girlfriend.
“We are investigating and carrying out the necessary verifications in Rouyn-Noranda. The people in the video and the witnesses will be met. Our investigation office will follow up over the next few days, ”confirms Lieutenant Benoît Richard, of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ),
“If violations are committed, reports will then be submitted,” adds Mr. Richard.
Geneviève Grégoire, head of communications at Metro, deplores this situation in their business in Abitibi-Témiscamingue after 15 months of pandemic.
“It is clear that we condemn what we see in this video. The employee only applies the sanitary rules. If customers don’t want to wear the mask in the grocery store, they can have their order delivered, ”says Mme Gregory.
According to her, this kind of event is very rare in their businesses and must be denounced.
Jean-François Belleau, director of government relations at the Retail Council of Canada, does not mince his words about the anti-mask couple.
“If we want to challenge the wearing of a mask, the most effective place is in front of the National Assembly, not in front of the fruit and vegetable department. It is not the insulted young girl who makes the decisions on the pandemic, it is in Parliament that it happens, ”criticizes Mr. Belleau.
“It is deplorable that individuals try to instrumentalize a simple grocery store employee in order to assert a point of view that nevertheless has a consensus in society. Quebecers are in favor of health measures and masks, ”he concludes.
