Apple headset will tackle challenges like spatial cognition

Much has been said about the possible Apple virtual/augmented reality headset, which could be released during WWDC23 next week. Being the company’s debut in an area in which it does not yet operate, the first generation of the product should not be a great sales success, but it will have to face challenges that other models from other brands have not faced.

An article from The Wall Street Journal gathered some of the challenges that Apple had/is having to deal with in the development of the headset. Overall, the company will need to implement features and operationalize the augmented reality system as a whole in more advanced and well-built ways than its competitors.

Something of paramount importance for these systems to actually help in everyday life and not just be another solution is the spatial cognition — that is, the ability to read, identify and interact with the space in which we live. A well-programmed system that manages to overcome this barrier will be able to offer both the most expected applications, such as maps and navigation, and others that we may not even imagine.

For example, instead of organizing documents into folders on the computer, we could spread “papers” around the table, but using augmented reality. Another application envisioned by WSJ was building models and other 3D creations, a process that can be much easier and more dynamic with the help of a headset than is possible using a computer.

Then there’s the area where virtual reality is perhaps most popular: gaming. Despite the interest on the part of users, competition in this field is also greater, with companies like Sony e Meta already established. The same challenges of delivering a system with a seamless user experience can be seen in this sector.

Another point that will be decisive for the penetration of the product in the market is its design. While some companies try to develop something closer to the conventional shape of a pair of sunglasses or prescription glasses, Apple’s choice — at least according to rumors — was a construction closer to that of ski goggles, as well as others competitor headsets.

A more robust design allows for more processing power and more advanced capabilities. However, if it is not something very practical, people tend to lose interest in the headset, so that the product becomes something more and more niche. People with longer hair and who wear makeup, for example, are not very encouraged to use such devices.

In short, different manufacturers have already tried a number of approaches in the field of VR/AR, but they still haven’t managed to create a new trend of everyday use for headsets, as it has with smartphones. It will take a lot of hardware and software engineering, as well as creativity and working together with developers, for us to see people using the Apple headset in the future, for example.

And you, what do you think should be a priority for Apple when creating your headset?
