The financial daily El Financiero reports that Central Bank officials made such a proposal as a joke. El Financiero reported that officials said the currency note was issued to mark Argentina’s 4-2 victory over France in the World Cup final on December 18 in a penalty shootout. But this is not an official decision. During a conversation between the officials, someone introduced this as a joke.
Before the FIFA World Cup finals even started, a central bank official had jokingly proposed the idea of issuing a peso note with Messi’s image on it if they won the title. But the report in El Financiero added that the proposal to include Messi’s image on the 1,000-peso note was made “as a joke”.
