ATP Masters: Thiem beats Nadal and qualifies for semi-finals –

Dominic Thiem is the “bête noire” of Rafael Nadal. After his success in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open acquired thanks to three victorious decisive games, the Austrian did it again in London in a match of very high level.

Dominic Thiem defeated Rafael Nadal 7-6 (9/7) 7-6 (7/4) on the 2nd day of the round robin of the group “London 2020”. Thanks to Stefanos Tsitsipas’ victory against Rublev, the Austrian is already assured of reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

Impressive against Andrey Rublev, Rafael Nadal gave way once again to Dominic Thiem in the “money time”. The 1st tie-break almost turned into a nightmare for the Mallorcan who led 5/2 before overwhelming two set points. The 2nd turned very quickly to the advantage of Dominic Thiem.

Still looking for a title in this Masters, which he is playing for the 10th time, Rafael Nadal will play his skin against the outgoing champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Mallorcan will have to erase the astonishing fragility that he could not hide in the exchange against Thiem. But it is true that the Austrian, finalist in Melbourne and victorious in New York, has become one of the best players in the world on the fast surfaces.
