ATP Queen’s: Wawrinka makes a successful comeback on grass – rts.ch

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 290) made a successful comeback on grass at the Queen’s ATP 500 tournament in London. The Vaudois beat the American Frances Tiafoe (27) 7-6 (7/2) 6-7 (6/8) 7-6 (7/5) after a fierce struggle of 2h49.

Wawrinka has lost none of his rage to win. Bad start in the 3rd set with a break conceded at the start, the Vaudois had the merit of believing in it until the end. For his first game on grass this season, “Stanimal” hung on to win on his 4th match point with a nice forehand.

History of decisive games

While he benefited from a match point in the tie-break of the 2nd set, Wawrinka had to leave the round to his rival. Author of 22 aces, the triple Grand Slam winner served the lead, but his engagement dropped him at the very start of the 3rd set. Fortunately, the Vaudois took advantage of a slack from his opponent to pick up the score at 5-5.

After a hard-won 11th game, everything was decided in a final tie-break. Thanks to an impressive backhand length, Wawrinka was able to pull Tiafoe back. In the next round, he will face the winner of the duel between Denis Shapovalov (ATP 15) and Tommy Paul (35).
