The magic of the electric car has worked on Audi’s emission-free novelty. With its 4.59 meters long, the Q4 e-tron is a bit bigger than a Q3, but it offers depending on the trunk volume of a Q5 (520 liters) and especially the space on board … of a Q7. The absence of a transmission tunnel, a relatively compact electric motor and batteries housed in the floor reduce overhangs and maximize the wheelbase, 2.76 meters.
We are still far from the wheelbase of a Q7 (2.99 meters), but the profile halfway between SUV and minivan with a non-plunging right roof make it possible to optimize interior volumes. It should still be noted that a Sportback version will also be in the catalog, with a more dynamic design.
Audi has tried to think outside the box on this Q4 e-tron. Just look at these storage spaces in the doors to accommodate large water bottles. It’s not much, others have done it, but we feel that Audi has tried things in a cabin with unusual lines.
The big news, as you will have noticed, is … the steering wheel! A completely new double-flat design, which makes it a sort of unique hexagon and for the first time in a production vehicle, a steering wheel that is not round at Audi. On this S Line version, it also adopts a chrome interior insert giving it a more futuristic look.
The on-board technology is structured around 4 levels: 10.25-inch digital instrumentation, which is now fairly standard at Audi, a large 10.1-inch touch screen (11.6-inch optional), voice control “Hey Audi “and above all a unique head-up display put forward by the manufacturer with the rings, which integrates augmented reality into its Q4 e-tron.
But what is it exactly? It is in fact a head-up display which adapts the real-time display according to the environment. A situation for example: when you activate navigation, in a roundabout, a dynamic arrow indicates which exit to take in the windshield. Larger than a conventional ATH, Audi’s system is also placed higher. It thus allows to have the gaze higher and further on the road.
This augmented reality actually works thanks to a front camera which continuously films the environment. The images are transcribed to a computer which also collects the GPS data. But that’s not all: the AR Creator, that’s its name, also uses camera, radar and stability control variables to “predict” body movements and compensate for them at the level of the body. head-up display to cancel screen vibrations.
The final presentation will take place in mid-April. We will then discover the exterior design but above all the technical specificities. But we can already tell you that the camera mirrors of the big brother e-tron will not be renewed here: Audi has confirmed that the share of customers choosing them is too low and that the additional cost on a Q4 e-tron is unjustified.
