Australian Open 2022 – Richard Gasquet abandons 2nd round face to Botic Van de Zandschulp

Three and a half years. We have to go back to September 2018 to see Richard Gasquet in the 3rd round of a Grand Slam. It was at the US Open and Novak Djokovic had then ended his adventure. In Melbourne too, he had reached this stage of the competition the same year, falling on Roger Federer. It was also the last time we saw the Biterrois play in Melbourne. If the reunion had gone wonderfully well, since he had knocked down Ugo Humbert (N.29) in the 1st round, Gasquet will leave Australia with a bitter taste in his mouth following his retirement against Botic van de Zandschulp this Thursday (4-6, 6-0, 4-0 ab.). The latter will be the opponent of Daniil Medvdev (N.2) or Nick Kyrgios in the 3rd round.

However, when Gasquet won a first set (6-4) in which he made the break quickly (at 1-1), we began to believe that the Frenchman had a good card to play against the surprise of the last US Open, beaten only in the quarter-finals after going through the qualifications. Alas, the sequel was going to seriously dampen our hopes when “BVZ” chained ten consecutive games to return to one set everywhere then lead 4-0 in the third. It was too much for Gasquet who preferred to throw in the towel. Van de Zandschulp could well find his executioner of the last US Open, the Russian Daniil Medvedev. This requires him to get out of the Nick Kyrgios trap.
