Authorities warn against using VPN in UAE

Dubai: Authorities have warned against the use of virtual private networks that ensure privacy in internet use. Strong measures will be in place to combat VPN usage that is against UAE laws. The culprits will be fined heavily.

The figures show that the number of VPN users in the UAE has increased by 36 percent. It is used both legitimately and illegally. A VPN is not illegal if it is used in accordance with the guidelines of the government and the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. Companies, institutions and banks can use VPN for internal purposes. At the same time, the country has strong restrictions on using it to access banned online content.

But there are people who use VPN to access restricted content like dating, gambling and porn websites and download audio and video calling apps. VPN is increasingly used to make audio and video calls through WhatsApp, Skype, FaceTime, Discord, IMO and dating apps.

According to Article 10 of the UAE Cyber ​​Law, people found misusing VPNs can be jailed and fined between Dh500,000 and Dh2 million.
