Most of the large Spanish banks have tightened in 2020 the requirements to avoid commissions and on the other hand, some have also increased the amount of these charges. The law establishes that entities have had to notify these changes to their clients with a minimum of two months.
As stated in Kelisto.es, Banco Santander has increased the commissions in the Zero 123 Account and in the Generation 81 Account and have eliminated one of the options with which the client could get rid of these surcharges: to maintain a balance monthly average of at least 60,000 euros in checking and savings accounts. In addition, the commission has been raised from 8 to 12 euros per month for those customers who do not meet the binding requirements.
For its part, BBVA has raised the account maintenance fees from 60 to 100 euros per year, except in the case that there is no payroll of up to 600 euros domiciled or up to five receipts that are charged to the account. Immediate transfers increase from 0.90 euros to 1.25% of the total amount. This commission increase will not affect BBVA online accounts.
Also, Bankia will tighten the requirements of the “Because it is you” program from next February 23 and in addition to having the payroll domiciled, the client must meet any of these conditions: make two purchases per month with credit cards, have contracted with Bankia some insurance or have at least 30,000 euros in funds, pension plans, or savings insurance. If these requirements are not met, a maintenance fee will be paid for the account of six euros per month, to which we must add 14 euros per year for the debit card. Those who do not have monthly income will have to pay 14 euros per month for the maintenance of the account plus 28 euros per year for the debit card.
Banco Sabadell has also changed its commission policy and with the exception of young people under 30 and retirees, the rest of the clients must pay a commission of five euros per month even in the case of having their payroll domiciled. Banco Sabadell gives the possibility of opening a new Oremium Expansion Account without commissions, but in addition to domiciling the payroll, it will be necessary to have at least 10,000 euros in funds, shares or pension plans, have self-protection insurance or sign an autorenting contract with the entity
«A real trend»
From the Organization of Consumers OCU they emphasize that the banks can unilaterally modify the conditions of their products, although they have to communicate the changes of individual way with an advance of at least two months, «unless the new conditions are more beneficial for the customers, in which case they can be applied immediately ».
Also, from the organization of consumers indicate that these increases “are not isolated events, but a real trend” since the entities are tightening at the same time the requirements that users are asked to guarantee the free accounts. .
